Creating Jobs in Allegheny County: Shapiro-Davis Administration Secures $21.7 Million Investment from CP Industries to Expand Manufacturing Operations, Creating 78 New Jobs

The Commonwealth is investing over $3.9 million to support the gas pressure vessel manufacturer’s growth in McKeesport, the company’s home since 1897.

Pennsylvania, which competed aggressively against several states for this expansion project, is the only state in the Northeast with a growing economy.

Since taking office, the Shapiro-Davis Administration has competed for and won over $43 billion in private sector investments that are creating nearly 29,000 new jobs and driving economic growth across Pennsylvania.

Harrisburg, PA – Today, Governor Josh Shapiro and Lt. Gov. Austin Davis announced the Commonwealth has secured a $21.7 million investment from CP Industries to expand its operations in Allegheny County. The Shapiro-Davis Administration is investing over $3.9 million in the project, creating 78 new jobs over the next five years and retaining 115 existing, full-time positions. Pennsylvania successfully competed against other states for this project, including Alabama and Michigan.

With their investment, CP Industries will build a new 25,000-square-foot facility at their McKeesport site and add equipment to more than triple its composite cylinder production facilitating sales to its key customers in alternative fueled on-board transportation. The company will also upgrade its steel cylinder operations with new equipment, boosting production capacity by 50 percent and supporting significant sales growth.

“Pennsylvania went head-to-head with other states to secure this investment in the Mon Valley — and we won,” said Governor Shapiro. “Time and again, our economic strategy and targeted investments are showing companies across the world that our Administration is committed to making the Commonwealth the best place in the nation for companies to grow. We put our people, communities, and businesses in a position to succeed, so that local communities like McKeesport can benefit. CP Industries will help create good-paying jobs and deliver real opportunity for folks throughout Allegheny County.”

Coordinated by the Governor’s BusinessPA team, CP Industries, part of EKC International, received a funding proposal from the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) for a $3,060,000 Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA) loan, a $805,000 Pennsylvania First grant, and a $115,800 WEDnetPA grant to train its workers.

“I grew up in McKeesport, in the shadow of steel mills that constantly remind you of southwestern Pennsylvania’s industrial past,” said Lt. Gov. Austin Davis. “We’re proud of that legacy, but today we’re looking toward the future, with a growing economy and a workforce that is second to none. It’s exciting to see a McKeesport company make the decision to stay right here and even expand, creating more jobs and building ladders of opportunity for the good people of Pennsylvania.”

Governor Shapiro’s Economic Development Strategy is a 10-year, targeted plan designed to help Pennsylvania win and become a national leader in economic development, innovation, and job creation. Manufacturing is one of the key industries outlined in the strategy that will help Pennsylvania build on its competitive advantages and create real opportunity for Pennsylvanians.

“Pennsylvania’s manufacturers continue to prove they can compete with anyone when they have the right partners,” said DCED Secretary Rick Siger. “CP Industries has deep roots in the Commonwealth, and this investment will help the company grow its operations, bring more manufacturing work back to Pennsylvania, and create new opportunities for workers in Allegheny County.”

CP Industries is a world leader in the manufacturing of large seamless pressure vessels for the containment and transportation of pressurized gases. Combining modern steel technologies with a long-standing tradition in forging and craftsmanship, CP Industries manufactures seamless pressure vessels that provide proficient means of containing and transporting compressed gases under a wide range of conditions in the domestic and international markets. Entering the composite vessel business in 2014, extended CPI’s reach into new markets such as renewable natural gas, hydrogen and space applications.

“We highly appreciate the support provided by the Commonwealth and other local agencies that allow us to continue our rich tradition in the McKeesport area,” said Michael Larsen, President, CPI. “We are excited to expand two of our critical product lines and continue to prove that this region provides world class manufacturing.”

“CP Industries’ expansion in McKeesport is a testament to Southwestern Pennsylvania’s competitive edge and our readiness to lead the energy transition,” said Stefani Pashman, CEO, Allegheny Conference. “Retaining and growing manufacturing pioneers like CPI in the Mon Valley is a major win – bringing high-quality jobs and critical capital investment to the community while strengthening the local supply chains that power a clean energy future. From supporting commercial natural gas fleets to driving hydrogen innovation, this expansion proves that our region has the skilled workforce, the infrastructure, and the collaborative ecosystem to help legacy companies scale up and compete on a national stage.”

“CP Industries has been making things in McKeesport for generations, and we want companies with deep roots in Allegheny County to continue to invest and grow here,” said County Executive Sara Innamorato. “Existing businesses are among our most important sources of job creation, and when they expand, they strengthen the local supply chains that support growing advanced manufacturing and aerospace sectors. Like Governor Shapiro, we want local businesses to know that Allegheny County is invested in their success.”
