Lebanon Warns of Intensifying Israeli Strikes Despite Ceasefire

(MENAFN) Lebanon’s prime minister has cautioned that the country is experiencing a sharp and “dangerous and unprecedented” rise in Israeli military activity in the southern region, even though a ceasefire agreement is technically in place.

According to reports, the Lebanese prime minister accused Israel of carrying out a broader pattern of destruction that extends beyond individual targets, arguing that the campaign is affecting the country as a whole rather than isolated sites. In remarks delivered at a press briefing in Beirut, he stated:

“Israel is pursuing a policy of comprehensive destruction that goes beyond targeting specific locations in Lebanon. What Israel is doing is not only a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty but also an attempt to erase history,” Salam said at a press conference in Beirut.

He further emphasized the severity of the situation, stressing that:

“We are facing dangerous and unprecedented Israeli attacks,” he added.

The prime minister reiterated that Lebanon remains committed to ending the conflict and preventing its territory from being used as a battleground for external disputes. He also maintained that military action cannot provide lasting security for Israel.

Regarding ongoing diplomatic efforts mediated by the United States between Lebanon and Israel, he noted that the Lebanese government is representing the population in these discussions. According to reports, he acknowledged uncertainty over the outcome but described negotiations as the most viable option available, stating:

“There is no guarantee that the negotiations will succeed, but this is the least costly option for Lebanon and our people,” he said.

Addressing concerns about the nature of these talks, he added:

“Does negotiation mean surrender? No. The professional work of the negotiating team is aimed at securing a ceasefire,” Salam added.

He also spoke directly to residents displaced by the violence in southern Lebanon, affirming that state institutions would continue efforts to achieve a ceasefire and advance reconstruction initiatives.

Despite the ceasefire that formally came into effect on April 17 and was later extended by 45 days starting May 17 through US mediation, Israeli air and ground operations have reportedly continued, according to reports.

Lebanese authorities stated on Thursday that since March 2, the ongoing attacks have resulted in more than 3,300 fatalities and forced over one million people from their homes.
