Trump Says Israel, Lebanon to Hold First Direct Talks in Decades
In a post on his Truth Social platform late Wednesday, Trump wrote that efforts were underway to create “a little breathing room” between the two sides, adding: “It has been a long time since the two leaders have spoken, like 34 years. It will happen tomorrow,”
The announcement follows recent diplomatic activity in Washington, where Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors met at the State Department in talks hosted by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, alongside senior US officials including the US ambassador to Lebanon, the State Department counsellor, and the US ambassador to the United Nations. The meeting did not include representation from Hezbollah.
Earlier, Trump said he had urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reduce military activity in Lebanon and indicated that Israel had agreed to scale back operations.
Despite a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024, Israel has continued strikes in southern Lebanon following a Hezbollah cross-border attack in March. Lebanese authorities report that the ongoing violence has resulted in over 2,000 deaths and more than one million people displaced since the escalation began.
The planned diplomatic contact comes amid broader US efforts to reduce tensions between Israel and Lebanon and encourage renewed political dialogue after decades of limited communication.
